Virginia’s Community Colleges System Portal | 9 Month-Teaching Faculty (Veterinary Technology)

General Description: The primary responsibility of a faculty member in the Virginia Community College System shall be to provide quality instruction for the students. The major emphasis shall be on good teaching by working with students in classrooms, laboratories, individual conferences, and related activities—to help the student develop their interests and abilities to their fullest capacity to become a better person, a better worker, and a better citizen.

Duties and Tasks:

  1. The primary purpose of the academic division is to provide a diverse student population with high quality instruction in a variety of developmental, transfer, occupational and technical curricula.
  2. This is a full-time teaching position in the AVMA accredited Veterinary Technology Program with courses offered both on campus and online to traditional and nontraditional students. Teach a variety of lecture and lab-based courses covering multiple species such as lab animal, small animal, exotics, food/livestock, equine and zoo animals.
  3. Responsibilities include service on program, campus and/or college-wide committees, curriculum review and development, course revision and design, and student academic advising.

KSAs:

  1.  Proficiency with anesthesia, dental radiography, advanced nursing techniques, and emergency and critical care procedures.
  2. Excellent interpersonal, analytical, oral/written communication skills.
  3. Ability to use instructional technology and work with live animals.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Current veterinary technician license in the Commonwealth of Virginia. If current licensure is with another state or is not active, then you must be able obtain or renew licensure with the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  2. Current rabies vaccination is required.
  3. A minimum of three years of full-time veterinary clinical experience, including surgery and dentistry. Part-time experience will be converted to its full-time equivalency.

Additional Considerations:

  1. Veterinary Technician Specialist.
  2. Prior experience teaching in higher education which may include classroom, hybrid, and online classes.
  3. Experience with, or commitment to, supporting a diverse, equitable, and inclusive working and learning environment.
  4. Experience in pharmacology, surgery, promoting advanced nursing techniques, animal dentistry, exotics, large animal medicine, lab animal/zoo medicine, and laboratory procedures.
  5. Fear Free Certified.

Potential salaries may range from $63,000 to $80,000 per nine months based on relevant professional and academic credentials and previous professional and/or teaching experience in accordance with Virginia Community College System (VCCS) guidelines.

The Wildlife Center of Virginia is an internationally acclaimed teaching and research hospital for wildlife and conservation medicine, located in Waynesboro, Virginia, in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley. The Center’s mission is to “teach the world to care about and care for wildlife and the environment.” Since its founding in 1982, the Center has cared for more than 100,000 wild animals, representing 200 species of native birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. The current annual caseload averages about 4500 patients.

The Wildlife Center has a professional staff of about 37 individuals who work together in the veterinary, outreach, operations, and advancement departments. While each of these departments carries out different functions, all staff work closely together as a team to support one another and the Center’s overall mission.

Position Description
The Wildlife Center of Virginia (WCV) is excited to offer a 13-month veterinary technician internship with an ideal start date of April 2026. Three licensed veterinary technicians and four veterinarians will supervise the successful candidate. The intern will also work with four wildlife rehabilitators and numerous students and volunteers. The intern will be involved in all aspects of wildlife medicine, including hematology, parasitology, cytology, radiography, anesthesia, medical treatments (restraint, medicating, IV catheter placement, venipuncture, wound care, bandaging, etc.), necropsy, husbandry, nutrition, rehabilitation, record maintenance, telephone consultations, and presentations at rounds. This internship will place a special emphasis on veterinary diagnostics, and a significant amount of time will be spent performing manual CBC’s, cytology, fecal examinations, and wildlife parasitology. The intern will also help train senior veterinary and technician students performing externships at the Center.

Duties and Responsibilities (training provided)

  • Perform diagnostic procedures (radiographs, blood work, and fecal exams) to evaluate patient health
  • Induce and monitor anesthesia on a variety of species 
  • Work as part of a team to complete daily patient treatments
  • Provide technical support to other hospital staff as needed, including patient admissions and maintenance and completion of daily patient records 
  • Assist with training students (veterinary and veterinary technician) and volunteers
  • Assist with hospital maintenance, including autoclaving, cleaning, and inventory control
  • Assist with other duties, such as rehabilitation tasks, feeding orphaned animals, etc.
  • Perform On-Call duties
  • Present at a state or national conference or submit a manuscript for publication

Required Qualifications

  • Commitment to wildlife, conservation, and the environment
  • Professional appearance and demeanor
  • To be considered for this position, the intern must be eligible for licensure in Virginia in Veterinary Technology. This means they must either be:
    • Currently licensed as a veterinary technician or
    • In the final semester of an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) approved veterinary technology program and able to provide a passing score on the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) within three months of the internship start date
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to lift/carry equipment and animals up to 50 pounds
  • Rabies pre-exposure vaccine series and/or titer within the last 2 years are required before starting

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Hardworking and efficient with good organizational skills
  • Even-tempered, ability to remain calm in stressful situations
  • Experience working with animals is required, experience with wildlife is preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to handle diverse, competing tasks independently, efficiently and flexible
  • Attention to detail
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

Compensation and Benefits

  • An hourly rate of $15.45 per hour, with additional compensation for overtime and on-call.
  • Three days off per week (working on Saturday, Sunday, and some holidays will be required)
  • 80 hours of vacation time per year
  • 40 hours of personal time per year
  • 48 hours of sick time per year
  • 50% health insurance coverage through a group plan
  • State veterinary license fees covered
