Job Description: Veterinary Nurse (Licensed Veterinary Technician)

The Veterinary Wellness Center of Roanoke provides full service veterinary medical and surgical care as well as integrative therapies to include rehabilitation (similar to physical therapy), acupuncture, herbal or botanical medicine, and veterinary medical manipulation (similar to osteopathic or chiropractic care).

Overview of Job Responsibilities: VWCR will utilize licensed veterinary for, at minimum, the following duties: laboratory services: venipuncture, fecal collection & analysis, urine collection (including cystocentesis) and analysis, microscopic blood exams, operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment, exfoliative cytology, communication with tertiary laboratories; imaging services: operation of digital radiography machines (including dental), operation & care of ultrasound machine, technical support of image cloud storage and acquisition with vendors; anesthesia services: endotracheal intubation, anesthesia administration under the instruction of a licensed DVM - including direct supervision of anesthetized patients, surveillance of appropriate patient analgesia, assistance with resuscitative procedures, routine care of anesthetic equipment; dental services: dental prophylaxis, single root dental extractions; professional services: administration of enemas, application of bandages, intravenous catheterization, urinary bladder catheterization, administration of various intravenous agents including as directed by DVM: blood products, antivenin, chemotherapy agents, controlled drugs,  crystalloids/colloids, patient triage, electrocardiography, therapy laser and rehabilitation treatments, client counseling, ear flush, client communication triage; surgical assisting: closure of simple, one layer skin lacerations - examined by a veterinarian prior to and following suture placement, removal of sutures, surgical site preparation, maintenance of surgical equipment, including sterility; facility care: routine cleaning and inventory surveillance duties (including drug log maintenance assistance) may be required by licensed veterinary technicians; regulatory issues: compliance with the Virginia Board of Veterinary Medicine, DEA, and OSHA regulations - random drug testing compliance will be required of all VWCR employees, and other duties as assigned.

Hours of work: Normal business hours are 8:30am-5:30pm, Monday thru Friday, with appointments starting at 9pm and ending at 5pm. We are proposing this part-time schedule for you: Tuesday thru Thursday: 8:30am to 5:30pm. It is possible these hours might vary if an emergency situation arises. 

Education Requirements: Graduate of an accredited veterinary technology program. Holding an active, in "good standing", Virginia Veterinary Technology License. Preference may be given to veterinary technicians who have completed or who are currently in the process of completing a Veterinary Technician Specialty. New graduates will be considered.

Position Description

The Veterinary Information Specialist position is responsible for responding to incoming cases on Pet Poison Helpline and SafetyCall's industry side via the telephone, email, and chat applications regarding potential toxic exposures, poisonings and other adverse events from pet owners and veterinarians related to various household and consumer products, animal health products, plants, OTC products, dietary supplements, prescription drugs, and other chemical exposures. Specialists take full histories and details of the events, triage the cases and provide accurate medical, health and safety information to the callers. Specialists document each case in an electronic record and follow up as necessary to ensure the well-being of the animals and facilitate adverse event reporting on the industry side. Information Specialists also handle minor human exposures. 

Full-time, 40 hrs/week. Shift times and shift days will vary and include weekends, typically 2 per month and up to 3 during our busy season, and some holidays. Shifts are 8 1/2 hours long an dare primarily evening shifts (shift start times are ranging from 2pm-6pm CST and shift end times ranging from 10:30pm-2:30am CST).
